ATNS, CEO agree to part ways
State-owned Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) has announced that it and CEO Nozipho Mdawe have agreed to end their working relationship, with effect from October 31 – well ahead of the expiry of her five-year contract.
Mdawe had been on special leave since March, amid an independent investigation by a law firm into the challenges facing the aviation sector in South Africa and, in particular, the role of ATNS and the CEO.
"We confirm that the investigation cleared the CEO of any wrongdoing and misconduct and that our decision to part ways is to allow both the company and the CEO a fresh start.
"We thank the CEO for her professional conduct and cooperation during the course of the investigation," comments ATNS chairperson Zola Majavu.
According to ATNS, Mdawe has decided to pursue other career opportunities outside of the ATNS following an "eventful" three-year stint at the helm of the organisation.
Majavu states that ATNS's primary objectives now are to stabilise its day-to-day operations and to begin the search for a new CEO.
The entity has been struggling in recent years to maintain necessary flight procedures, which it has attributed to the global shortage of flight procedure designers.
Meanwhile, Airlines Association of Southern Africa CEO Aaron Munetsi recently called on ATNS to partner with airlines to resolve the suspension of hundreds of instrument flight procedures (IFPs) – routes and approach procedures used by pilots to safely navigate take-offs and landings in low-visibility conditions. The suspension of the IFPs has resulted in widespread flight delays, diversions and cancellations.
