Name of the Project
Bailong Phase I nuclear power plant (NPP).

Location
China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Project Owner/s
Guangxi Nuclear Power, a subsidiary of State Power Investment Corporation.

Project Description
Phase I of the Bailong NPP (units 1 and 2) is planned to include two CAP1000 pressurised water reactors.

Once Bailong units 1 and 2 are put into operation, the power generation of the plant will be about 20-billion kilowatt-hours a year.

Potential Job Creation
More than a thousand workers are building Unit 1, including the nuclear and conventional islands, module assembly workshops and testing and maintenance buildings, all aiming to complete the first concrete pour for the nuclear island foundation within the year.

Capital Expenditure
About $5.6-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The project was approved in August 2024 and is expected to take about 56 months to build.

Latest Developments
Nine major contracts have been signed for the construction of units 1 and 2 of the Bailong NPP, according to the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute.

Nuclear news publication World Nuclear News reported on March 11 that the contracts included the general contracting for the units, the main project construction supervision service contract, the marine engineering special general contracting framework agreement, the nuclear island civil engineering and installation contract, as well as the conventional island and its balance of plant construction and installation contract.

The contracts were awarded by Guangxi Nuclear Power Company to the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute.

The excavation of about 66 000 m3 of earth to form the foundation pit, which will eventually be 12.2 m deep and cover about 3 000 m2, started in late December 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of March 2025.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None disclosed.
