South Africa’s air traffic management and control agency, Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), has confirmed that air traffic services at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (Ortia) operated normally and were stable yesterday. ATNS also assured that its staffing levels, in all key areas, were “adequate”.

“The organisation can also confirm that it has valid operational instrument flight procedures at the airport to enable access and in cases of inadequacies, contingency measures are published to support operations,” further assured the agency. “ATNS remains committed to ensuring the safety, efficiency and reliability of air traffic services and will continue to provide updates should operational conditions change.”

The agency noted that air traffic varied, with peaks in demand expected at certain periods. The greatest demand at Ortia was usually in the morning, with another upsurge in the afternoon. ATNS has “planned adequately” to handle these peak demand periods, safely and efficiently.

Weather also affected air traffic. Again, the agency assured that it closely monitored weather conditions and would implement the required operational procedures needed to minimise the impact on airline flight operations.
