Barrick announces new appointments
Toronto-listed Barrick Mining has announced the appointments of James J. McGuire as chief legal and policy officer and Woo Lee as chief global affairs officer.
Both executives will report to president and CEO Mark Hill and will join Barrick’s executive committee.
McGuire brings more than 30 years of legal experience, spanning civil and criminal matters, and representing corporations, financial institutions and individuals on complex legal and policy issues. In his new role, he will oversee Barrick’s legal, compliance, regulatory and public policy functions.
He joins Barrick from Greenspoon Marder, where he served as litigation partner and managing partner of the firm’s New York office. Earlier in his career, he was a federal criminal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York and a law clerk to a US District Judge. He holds degrees from Harvard Law School, the London School of Economics, the University of Oxford and Yale University.
Poupak Bahamin will assume the role of general counsel and chief compliance officer and will remain on the executive committee.
Lee, who has been with Barrick for more than 11 years, most recently served as senior VP and head of government and corporate affairs, Asia Pacific. In his new role as chief global affairs officer, he will lead the company’s global government affairs strategy and manage sovereign and government relationships across its operating jurisdictions.
Before joining Barrick, Lee worked for over 30 years in Washington, China and East Asia, including service as a US diplomat in the State Department, where he held senior posts at American embassies and consulates across the Asia-Pacific region. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and speaks Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Barrick said the appointments underscore its emphasis on government engagement and public policy as core capabilities supporting its strategy, licence to operate and long-term value creation.
