Business community mourns Dabengwa’s passing
Condolences have streamed in for the late Sifiso Dabengwa, who previously served as a nonexecutive director for State-owned power utility Eskom and CEO of telecommunications company MTN.
The current board of Eskom acknowledged Dabengwa’s contribution to enhancing governance and management within the organisation, while industry body Business Unity South Africa (Busa) says he provided visionary leadership to the telecommunications industry.
Dabengwa had been instrumental in guiding MTN through significant phases of growth and transformation across Africa between 2011 and 2015, Busa says.
His famil on September 1 confirmed his death following a battle with cancer.
“Dabengwa's legacy as a leader who prioritised both strategic growth and the development of people around him will continue to inspire the business community. His role in advancing connectivity and economic development in Africa is a lasting tribute to his life's work,” Busa states.
In an earlier statement, MTN president and CEO Ralph Mupita said Dabengwa’s impact on MTN and the broader industry was significant.
“Sifiso was respected not only for his professional achievements but also for [the] integrity, humility and the respect he showed to all who worked with him. He was a mentor to many and a leader who exemplified the values of commitment and service.
“His legacy will continue to inspire us as we move forward,” he said.
