Global leader and reference in heavy lifting and engineered transport Sarens, in a press release in May, reaffirmed its position as an important partner in large-scale projects, citing its involvement in operations for oil and gas in Mozambique.

Sarens was involved, in Maputo, on operations to assist the floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility which, once inaugurated in mid-2022, will be one of the largest in the world.

This project is a part of Coral South, the first offshore project in the African country, that will be aimed at the extraction and sale of natural gas and will bring numerous jobs and economic benefits to the country.

Sarens noted that the Coral South project is expected to be the world’s deepest FLNG facility with wells drilled nearly 2 000 m deep. Six wells in total will flow into the liquefaction unit.

Once the project starts its operations in mid-2022, it will be able to extract 450-billion cubic metres of gas from the site, which will mean a total volume of 3.4-million tons a year of natural gas.

Sarens was on site for unloading and lifting the mooring chains that attach the FLNG installation to the offshore drilling surface, which allows for the hook-up and conduct of natural gas extraction operations.

To manage the liftings required for this project, Sarens shipped a 250 t hook block, which is capable of lifting the chains needed in this project.

In addition to the hook block, the CC1100 crane had a left hand configuration and 7.25 m of track, while an 80 t counterweight was also required to balance the lifting operations, as well as an additional 42 m jib.

The project lasted three months, from planning, through the equipment test trials and final execution. The direct and indirect collaboration and participation of the entire Sarens team, ensured that the operation was successfully completed on schedule.

Sarens stated that it is capable of carrying out similar operations, which will represent a milestone for the oil and gas segment in Mozambique, owing to its local staff, which the company has been recruiting and forming for 12 years.

Having been present in the country for more than a decade, Sarens has developed its portfolio in several fields, from mining and construction, to port operations and oil and gas.

It noted that it continues to be part of key projects and has positively intervened on several relevant projects in Mozambique.

These include the oil and gas Coral South Project Area 4, handling Xtmas trees in Nacala; load-out mooring chains and reel; the Nacala Harbour rehabilitation project; discharging heavy transformers at the Nacala port; the oil and gas offloading pontoon alongside Early Beach Landing in Afungi; the Maputo port rehabilitation project; the heavy engines replacement project at the cement factory in Maputo; the Moatize Phase 1 project; the Vale mine’s combined heat and power project; Sasol’s pipe installation in Temane; the Fuel Temperature Coefficient reactor replacement at Mozal Maputo; and the lifting and transport services project at Mocimboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado.

At the time of publication, Sarens noted that it also focuses on local content and the participation of local communities.

It noted that, given its global presence, it is able to respond to any possible need that may arise at the projects in which it participates, either because its technical infrastructure is already present at the destination, or because it can transport the required equipment from anywhere in the world. “This facilitates the work of engineering teams, who can plan their work with the certainty that they will have the appropriate machinery to fulfil their goals.”
