Digital tipping at fuel stations
A digital tipping system aimed at enabling an easy and convenient way for customers to tip petrol attendants at fuel stations, has been launched nationwide by South African fuel brand Sasol.
Tipped is a digital tipping and payment solution for workers to receive gratuities. The solution makes use of a QR code and a digital wallet. Customers scan a QR code presented by the attendant to pay a tip straight to the attendant’s digital wallet.
Using the Masterpass payment platform, the system supports mobile banking apps from most of the major banks as well as digital wallets such as SnapScan, Zapper, Spot, Telkom Pay and VodaPay.
Forecourt staff can join the system through an onboarding process that requires only proof of identification. Once the app has been loaded, attendants can transact, transfer money to accounts and enjoy cashback rewards at affiliated stores.
“Partnering with Tipped aligns with our strategy at a time when our customers are embracing digital payments. We are pleased to be supporting an innovative, local female-owned technology startup, following successful pilots of the solution at selected sites,” said Sasol Energy marketing and sales VP: strategic marketing Zanele Hadebe.
“Receiving digital tips helps safeguard attendants from cash crime risks and gives them control over their money. It also enables us to evolve towards a cashless environment, which reduces costs and security risks at our forecourts.”
“Tipped receivers on average increase gratuities by almost 40%. The secret of Tipped’s success is that it makes it simple and seamless for anyone to reward a receiver without downloading an app or jumping through any hoops,” noted Tipped CEO Kimlynn Temple.
