On September 14, the Durban Car Terminal safely offloaded the first batch of automotive manufacturer Geely vehicles from the Vessel MV MOL Cattleya Ace, which ferried a total of 147 plug-in electric vehicles from China.

“South Africa continues to embrace electric and hybrid technologies. It’s encouraging to see major international car brands expanding in South Africa. The return of Geely Motors to South Africa after an absence of 14 years is a commercial milestone and a signal of confidence in our market and infrastructure,” says Transnet Durban Terminals managing executive Earle Peters.

The Durban Car Terminal is South Africa’s largest roll-on, roll-off terminal, and is equipped with digital yard-management technologies. In 2022, the terminal handled more than 600 000 fully-built units, which is the highest recorded in a single year.

In August, the terminal handled automotive manufacturer Tata’s vehicles, after a six-year absence in South Africa, without any safety incident, he adds.

“We anticipate more developments of this nature in the future. The terminal is committed to providing the required infrastructure and operational excellence needed to enable the growth of sustainable mobility in South Africa,” Peters says.
