Durban Direct welcomes Qatar Airway’s decision to increase flights to the city
Air travel and cargo development initiative Durban Direct has highlighted the recent decision by global major airline group Qatar Airways to increase the number of its flights between its home base, Doha, and Durban. With effect from March 1, the carrier will be operating seven flights a week on its Durban route (which includes a stop in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique).
Durban Direct serves to develop routes at the city’s King Shaka International Airport, which serves the whole of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province. The initiative takes the form of a committee, and it notes that Qatar’s decision showed the airline’s confidence in the Durban and wider KZN markets.
The initiative also points to December’s 11.6% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers at King Shaka International Airport. This emphasises the province’s strong international and domestic air travel demand. (KZN can offer tourists a wide range of attractions, including tropical beaches, game reserves, and mountains, as well as cultural and historical attractions. It is also a major business centre.)
“These developments strengthen KwaZulu-Natal’s position to propel South Africa’s tourism and business while offering passengers more flexibility in global travel,” states the initiative. The members of Durban Direct are (in alphabetical order) Airports Company South Africa, Durban Tourism, Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone, Enterprise Ilembe, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Investe Durban, KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, South African Tourism, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal.
