Macassar WWTW upgrade, South Africa

Name of the Project
Macassar WWTW upgrade.
Location
The work will be conducted within the boundaries of the existing Macassar Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) property between Khayelitsha and Strand, along the False Bay coastline, in South Africa’s Western Cape province.
Project Owner/s
South Africa’s City of Cape Town.
Project Description
The project proposes to refurbish or replace process units, facilities and amenities of the existing Macassar WWTW.
The project aims to achieve improved treatment of the wastewater and improved operation of the works, for the liquid and sludge process streams.
The upgrade will more than double the plant’s current treatment capacity, from 34-million litres a day to 80-million litres a day, to cater for population growth over the next 20 years. Key improvements will include:
- new inlet works providing enhanced screening and degritting;
- flow balancing; primary sedimentation to reduce nutrient loads;
- new biological reactors with full nutrient removal process configuration;
- UV and chlorine disinfection; and
- refurbishment of the maturation ponds, among others.
As part of the refurbishment of the WWTW, the City of Cape Town has proposed the construction of additional electrical infrastructure, to supply power to the site from the nearest Eskom substation, which will require:
- 2 × 11 kV MV cables, 300 mm apart and a length of 6 941 m; and
- a trench with a depth of 1 m and width of 1 m, with a buffer of 500 mm offset either side of the proposed route.
