Name of the Project
Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2).

Location
UK, between Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, in Scotland; and Drax, in North Yorkshire, in England, UK.

Project Owner/s
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission.

Project Description
The EGL2 high-voltage direct current cable connection from Scotland to England comprises 436 km of submarine cable and 69 km of onshore cable. The project will deliver a 2 GW high-voltage electricity ‘superhighway’ cable link that will help harness the potential of British offshore wind power.

The project comprises three main sections:

  • a northern point of connection, in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, which entails the construction of a new onshore converter station and installation of underground cabling from the converter station to landfall at Sandford bay.
  • a marine cable route, which entails the installation of subsea cabling from Sandford bay, through Scottish and English waters to landfall at Wilsthorpe, England.
  • a southern point of connection, with an onshore underground cable to be installed from landfall, in Wilsthorpe, to a new onshore converter station built in Drax, England.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
£3.4-billion through Ofgem’s accelerated strategic transmission investment (ASTI) framework. EGL2 is the first of 26 projects to complete a fast-track process to secure funding through this investment. The ASTI accelerates the funding process by up to two years, allowing for electricity generated by offshore wind to be delivered to British consumers sooner.

Planned Start/End Date
Work on the project is expected to start later this year and to be complete by 2029.

Latest Developments
None stated.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None yet awarded.
