Emmerson mulls next steps as updated ESIA may not be approved
After submitting an updated environmental- and social-impact assessment (ESIA) incorporating optimisations from its Khemisset Multimineral Process (KMP), London-listed potash developer Emmerson has advised of an “unfavourable recommendation” having been made on the application’s approval.
The unfavourable recommendation was made by Morocco’s Commission Régionale Unifiée de l’Investissement (CRUI), which reviewed the ESIA.
Although Emmerson has not received formal notification of a decision and is seeking clarification regarding both a decision and the unfavourable recommendation, the company is reviewing the available regulatory and legal options with respect to an appeal and assessing its next actions.
Emmerson owns 100% of the Khemisset potash project, in Morocco, and has successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of KMP products as sources of phosphate through crop trials.
The company submitted the updated ESIA in the second quarter of the year, while also working on a re-evaluation of the mineral resource at Khemisset taking into account the KMP’s impact.
The new mineral resource estimate will reflect the improved potash recovery and monetisation of previously discarded micronutrients.
“The benefits of the KMP, along with previous improvements such as using recycled water and switching to dry stack tailings, underline our commitment to delivering a project with robust environmental and social credentials,” Emmerson previously stated.
