As the combustion equipment industry becomes more aware of the effects it has on the environment and workers, greater emphasis is being placed on the efficiency and safety of boilers and burners in industrial applications.

Owing to this, instrumentation solution designer and manufacturer E Instruments product manager Bill Freed says the company’s newly released combustion gas and emissions analyser, the E4500N, provides accurate and reliable nitrogen oxide measurements, thereby enabling operators of combustion equipment to achieve environmental compliance.

Using emissions analysers enables manufacturers and operators of boilers and burners to quickly and accurately measure the level of emissions being created by combustion equipment at crucial site areas, he adds. The data that the device stores can be used to improve the safety of workers, achieve energy efficiency and reduce air pollution.

“One significant trend in the boilers and burners industry is moving towards low nitrogen oxides (NOx) burners that are better for the environment and health of operators.”

Energy efficiency, environmental compliance and emissions monitoring are becoming stringent and widespread globally, Freed notes, adding that more stringent regulations governing emissions will ensure that burners and boilers are efficiently and safely operated.

Owing to the size and compact design of the device, Freed say the E4500-N can be used to take measurements at various locations of an industrial plant or boiler room, enabling operators to ensure that combustion equipment is functioning efficiently and safely. This will also ensure that equipment emissions on site comply with environmental regulations.

The new unit boasts a number of new features, which include the ability to measure total NOx and low nitrogen oxide, an internal printer with nonfading paper, Bluetooth-enabled software, and carbon monoxide auto-range dilution to 50 000 ppm.

The internal memory of the device has been expanded and can now store up to 2 000 tests, from a previous capacity of 900 tests. Subsequently, data from the device can be logged automatically or manually. Once the data is saved, it can then be recalled on the unit’s display screen, printed on the internal printer, or loaded onto a separate computer for long-term storage.

E Instruments has ensured that the device can operate in tough industrial conditions. The device features an external water trap to allow for condensate removal, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack and unbreakable metal hose connectors. Downtime caused by the replacement of parts is kept to a minimum, as the E4500N uses precalibrated field sensors, which can be easily removed and replaced.

Commenting on its product offering, Freed mentions that E Instruments’ innovative approach to measurement instruments has been well received and implemented in a range of industrial applications in the power generation, refineries, cement, mining, asphalt and marine industries.

“E Instruments successfully works with distributors and customers throughout Africa to provide portable combustion gas and emissions analysers for the optimisation of boilers and burners’ operations,” he states.

The new hand-held emissions analyser is being supplied globally through various distribution channels and has seen positive uptake since its release earlier this year.

As the combustion equipment industry is increasingly impacted on by the tightening of emissions and environmental regulations, Freed believes that E Instruments will continue to strive to provide the global market with innovative, technically advanced instruments and industry-leading customer support.
