Engen Brings Solar Power to Wentworth Secondary

The future is shining brighter at Wentworth Secondary School, thanks to Engen’s national solar programme, which is being rolled out at schools across South Africa.
The school’s newly installed 15kW portable solar container represents the latest evolution in Engen’s renewable energy drive. Equipped with a battery backup system, it ensures an uninterrupted power supply even during outages - providing clean, reliable energy that reduces reliance on the national grid, lowers electricity costs, and cuts carbon emissions.
“Education is the cornerstone of progress, and by supporting both academic resources and sustainable infrastructure, we aim to empower the next generation with opportunities to thrive in a technology-driven world,” says Olwethu Mdabula, Engen CSI Manager.
The Wentworth project forms part of Engen’s broader national solar rollout, following recent installations in South Durban at Hillview High School (February 2025) and Ganges Secondary School (November 2024) – both of which host Engen Maths and Science School (EMSS) classes.
Engen plans to extend this renewable energy programme to all ten EMSS centres nationwide, reinforcing its dual commitment to sustainability and STEM education.
Engen’s dedication to producing sustainable green energy reflects its commitment as a responsible corporate citizen. The company’s focus on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals reinforces this commitment. These investments inspire learners to engage with and contribute to a sustainable environment where they live,” says Simlindele Manqina, Engen’s Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement Manager.
Earlier this month, a 15kW solar power system was launched at Marikana North High School in the North West province, in collaboration with Tharisa Mines.
The project was spearheaded by Engen Business & Energy Solutions (EBES), whose renewable energy expertise ensured seamless implementation.
“These portable 15kW solar containers with UPS units are compact, scalable, and efficient – ideal for schools,” explains Kevin Singh, Head of EBES. “The inclusion of battery backup ensures uninterrupted power.”
Through its solar rollout, Engen is not only powering schools but also fuelling dreams, innovation, and a sustainable future for South Africa.
