The Engen Community Computer School marked another significant milestone today, celebrating the graduation of 87 learners from its free digital literacy programme. This brings the total number of graduates to over 3,500 since the school’s inception in 2009.

Held at the Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth on 4 December 2025, the ceremony recognised the achievements of learners who completed Engen’s four-month computer training course - a programme designed to equip unemployed South Durban residents with the digital skills essential for the modern workplace.

The Engen Community Computer School offers free training in basic computer literacy, Microsoft Office, internet navigation, email, CV development and job-readiness skills. Over the years, it has become a lifeline for jobseekers from the Wentworth, Austerville, Bluff and Merebank communities.

The school’s track record continues to impress, with the figures speaking for themselves: 21% of May graduates are employed, 5% have been placed in learnerships, and 16% are pursuing further studies.

In addition, 10% of August graduates are employed, and among the December 2025 graduating class, three learners have been accepted into learnerships, while another three have already secured employment.

These outcomes highlight the ongoing relevance and impact of the programme in an increasingly technology-driven job market.

One of the most inspiring graduates attending the graduation ceremony today was Olwethu Mgagula, who has lived with a physical disability since the age of two and walks with crutches. Despite these challenges, Olwethu travelled to the centre every day on foot, determined to become computer literate. Olwethu said the course meant a lot to him. “I didn’t finish matric, so this is a big opportunity for me and will open doors.”  His commitment and perseverance moved facilitators and fellow learners alike.

“Education changes lives,” said Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager.

“By offering free, accessible computer training, we aim to build the digital confidence necessary for everyday life and future employment. We are incredibly proud of our graduates and wish them success on their journey towards financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.”
