Enpower awarded import/export licence for energy trading in SADC

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has granted energy trading company Enpower Trading an electricity import and export licence.

Enpower says this marks a pivotal step in advancing regional electricity trade across Southern Africa.

As one of the first South African private companies to secure such a licence, it is testament to the implementation of the Electricity Regulation Act to facilitate market liberalisation to the benefit of South Africa.

The licence enables Enpower to deliver clean, and competitively priced electricity from independent power producers (IPPs) and contribute to a more integrated regional power market.

The import/export licence complements Enpower’s existing domestic electricity trading licence, which Nersa granted in 2022.

By facilitating electricity imports during domestic shortages, Enpower aims to minimise renewable-energy curtailment and ease pressure on South Africa’s grid while generating transmission and distribution fees. This enhances energy security, supports IPPs through export opportunities and attracts investment into the region’s generation sector.

“Cross-border trading is a critical lever for improving supply reliability and affordability. We are proud to lead the way toward a flexible, secure and sustainable energy future with Nersa’s support,” says Enpower CEO James Beatty.

Enpower’s regional strategy is bolstered by a commercial agreement with Enterprise Power in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is a key player in the Southern African Power Pool.

Enterprise Power’s Kalumbila-Kolwezi 330 kV interconnector project, which links with Zambia, will unlock up to 700 MW of cross-border trading capacity. This aligns with Enpower’s goal of fostering efficient and responsible energy exchange in the Southern African Development Community.
