The conversion of traditionally fuelled vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) – a growing trend, owing to the various benefits for businesses and industry – will contribute to long-term operational efficiency and overall fleet optimisation, as well as supplement “greening credentials”, says leading developer of EV powertrain technology Electrogenic.

The company is making headway in providing clients with solutions that fully and seamlessly convert petrol- or diesel-powered fleets to EVs. CEO Steve Drummond says that the company’s in-house-developed software solution – or vehicle control unit (VCU) software – is at the core of its technology suite and is a “market leading solution that has been tried and tested over many vehicles and many years to ensure its reliability”.

As fleet vehicles across all sectors accrue high yearly mileages, the use of Electrogenic’s EV conversion and powertrain technology has the added benefit of producing cost-savings for businesses, by reducing fuel and maintenance costs.

“The numbers will be different in each country but, in the UK, for example, a Land Rover conversion of a vehicle in daily use on a working farm has a payback of four years on fuel savings alone, and there are significant maintenance savings on top of that,” says Drummond.

Additionally, he believes that EVs and EV conversions can particularly benefit mining operations, as this solution can help these operations improve air quality, reduce fuel and maintenance costs, and use the high torque at low-speed characteristic of electric motors to excellent effect.

Electrogenic’s EV conversions can also benefit the global agricultural sector by powering farm vehicles and other equipment. Farmers can reduce their carbon emissions and save on fuel.

There are also potential benefits for industries such as tourism and defence, Drummond points out.

“For specific industries there are additional benefits - for example, better air quality for mining, significant noise reduction for safari vehicles, and speed and ease of offroad driving for defence,” he adds.

He cites a real-world example of Electrogenic’s EV conversion systems, pointing to the company’s ongoing delivery of Land Rover conversion kits for the East African safari market.

Another example is the delivery of four electric combat vehicles to the British Army for trial earlier this year. The Army is busy using their new EVs to evolve battlefield tactics and inform procurement for new generations of offroad EVs.

“The way to think about Electrogenic is that we are experts in EV powertrain and battery design and manufacture, and can create a solution to any EV requirement,” Drummond enthuses.
