The EPR Waste Association of South Africa (eWASA) has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to environmental stewardship by signing the Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS) pledge.
Operation Clean Sweep® is an international initiative designed to prevent pellet, flake, and powder loss and ensure that plastic does not escape into the environment, particularly in aquatic ecosystems. By signing the pledge, eWASA commits to implementing best practices to prevent plastic waste from entering waterways and contributing to marine pollution.
Keith Anderson, CEO of eWASA, expressed his enthusiasm for the organisation's decision to sign the OCS pledge, stating, "We are excited to have signed Operation Clean Sweep®. This initiative aligns with our mission to promote responsible waste management practices and protect the environment for future generations."
Plastics SA, the official licensee of Operation Clean Sweep® in South Africa, welcomed eWASA's commitment to the cause. Plastics SA signed the Declaration of the Global Plastics Associations for Solutions on Marine Litter in March 2011, demonstrating its dedication to addressing the issue of marine pollution caused by plastic waste.
Douw Steyn, Sustainability Director at Plastics SA, commended eWASA's decision, stating, "We applaud eWASA for joining Operation Clean Sweep® in the fight against plastic pollution. Collaboration among industry stakeholders is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by plastic waste, and eWASA's commitment reinforces our collective efforts towards a cleaner environment."
By signing the OCS pledge, eWASA joins a global network of companies and organisations committed to reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable practices throughout the plastics value chain. The initiative focuses on preventing plastic waste at the source, emphasising the importance of proper handling, storage, and disposal of plastic materials to prevent environmental contamination.
Operation Clean Sweep® provides participating organisations with guidelines and resources to implement effective plastic management strategies, including employee training, equipment maintenance, and spill prevention measures. By adhering to these principles, eWASA aims to minimize its environmental footprint and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.
As part of its commitment to Operation Clean Sweep®, eWASA will work closely with Plastics SA and other stakeholders to raise awareness about the importance of responsible plastic management and encourage industry-wide participation in the initiative. Together, they strive to create a more sustainable future where plastic waste is effectively managed and prevented from polluting the environment.
