Expanded conference programme promises value
CRITICAL INTERACTIONS Forging partnerships and investment opportunities for the future of mining, will be driven home at this year's Investing in African Mining Indaba
Building on the success of the 2024 iteration of the Investing in African Mining Indaba, this year’s edition, being held from February 3 to 6, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, will feature an expanded conference programme that offers valuable insights and actionable takeaways for attendees, says Mining Indaba head of content and strategic partnerships Laura Nicholson.
She explains that event organisers Hyve Group are “redefining the future of mining” with their disruptive discussions, with Mining Indaba starting with a look at redefining critical minerals.
“The global demand for critical minerals is increasing at an unprecedented rate, and we’ll be exploring how this reshapes everything from investment strategies to geopolitics,” says Nicholson.
Hyve Group claims that Mining Indaba will, this year, elevate government engagement by introducing exclusive forums which will be attended by invitation only, and will also introduce a new government space.
The government space will provide a unique environment where policymakers and industry leaders can come together to address the challenges and opportunities facing the mining sector – an initiative aimed at fostering collaboration between governments and the private sector to shape the future of African mining, she explains.
“The ever-important role of technology in transforming mining practices is undeniable, and Mining Indaba 2025 will showcase the latest in mining automation, robotics and other technological innovations,” says Nicholson.
“The Technology and Exhibition Space will provide a first-hand look at how these technologies are reshaping the industry and driving efficiency and sustainability,” she enthuses.
Social Matters Matter
One of the most exciting additions to this year’s Mining Indaba, says Nicholson, is its focus on amplifying the voices of mining communities and Indigenous Peoples.
“Mining Indaba will provide a platform for these groups to share their perspectives and ensure that their needs and concerns are heard as the industry evolves,” she says, adding that this inclusion is crucial for ensuring that mining is not only profitable but also socially responsible and sustainable.
Relatedly, as the world shifts toward the adoption of electric vehicles and renewable-energy technologies, Nicholson says Africa’s role in supplying critical minerals for these industries is becoming more important than ever.
In addressing this matter, the Downstream Buyers session of Mining Indaba, taking place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will address the challenges that these industries face, such as supply chain transparency, geopolitical risks and sustainability. “This will be a critical space for discussing ethical sourcing practices and fostering collaboration between different sectors,” she says.
