The 100 00th truck assembled at FAW Trucks South Africa’s plant in Coega – a JH6 28.500FT, 6 × 4 AMT truck tractor – has rolled off the assembly line.

This follows the start of assembly in 2014, in an investment valued at R600-million.

All units arrive at the Eastern Cape plant in completely knocked-down form and are then assembled at the Coega plant.

FAW Trucks has been active in South Africa for 28 years. The company consists of joint investments by China’s FAW group and the China-Africa Development Fund.

The 30 000 m2 facility includes a training facility, a body shop and a paint shop.

The current production line-up includes seven models, with assembly volumes at around 200 units a month.

FAW has reported record sales in the last two quarters.

“The last eight years, following the opening of our production facility, has seen the brand enter a period of rapid growth within the highly competitive commercial vehicle market,” says FAW Trucks South Africa CEO Yongjun Li.

“Whilst we are proud of being able to surpass the 10 000 production mark in only eight years, we are only just getting up to speed,” he adds.

“There are plans in place to ramp up production in order to meet demand, which should see us surpass the 15 000-mark before the end of 2023.”

The FAW plant produced its 8 000th unit at the beginning of the year, forecasting that it would reach 10 000 units in December.

The plant assembled 1 539 units at the plant in 2021, at an average of 128 units a month.
