Good relations drive colliery conveyors

Mechanical power transmission specialists Hansen Transmissions has secured an order for the supply of drives for overland conveyors to Mafube colliery, a joint venture between Anglo Coal and Exxaro. The order, valued at about R4,5-million, was placed by materials-handling company Roymec.

Hansen Transmissions will also supply 11 gearboxes, ranging in size from 1,5 kW to 315 kW, to drive smaller conveyors at Mafube colliery’s processing plant. This order, valued at about R1,2-million, was received from Dowding Reynard & Associates.

Hansen Transmissions sales manager Clive Dicks says the reason that Hansen Transmissions was entrusted with this order for 20 drives is that the company has enjoyed a good relationship with Roymec over the years. “Roymec know that they can rely on Hansen Transmissions’ product quality as well as on its service support,” says Dicks.

The run-of-mine and product conveyor drives at Mafube colliery include geared motors and P4 gearboxes ranging in sizes from 7,5 kW to 500 kW. Anglo Coal specified that the gearboxes run at noise levels below 83 dbA and also meet the specification of at least 100 000 hours L10 bearing life on all boxes. “This is becoming the norm in the supply of gearboxes in most applications,” explains Dicks.

Hansen Transmissions calculates package design, which is combined with customer information to determine bearing life, shaft stresses, bending moments and thermal ratings. This is calculated locally through the company’s engineering programme known as ‘Win Carat’.

“Commissioning of the units on site will take place in September 2007. The Hansen Transmissions service team, under the leadership of Chris le Roux, will cold-commission on site and will be responsible for servicing the gearboxes,” concludes Dicks.
