Koeberg temporarily operated at reduced power
Power utility Eskom reported on January 20 that both units at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, in the Western Cape, were safely reduced from full power to 100 MW each earlier in the day following a fault on the 132 kV transmission lines supplied from the Pinotage transmission substation near Stellenbosch.
It stated this was an expected response under such circumstances, designed to protect the integrity of the power station and the national grid.
The utility noted that neither of the nuclear reactors were affected by the incident and that the National Nuclear Regulator had been informed of the incident.
"Importantly, there is no risk of loadshedding due to adequate national generation reserves and the National Transmission Company South Africa has given approval for Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to begin increasing the power output of both units," it stated.
Eskom further assured the public and stakeholders that the power station continues to operate safely and securely and that all necessary regulatory and operational protocols are being followed.
