The Foundation L’Oréal announced on Monday that the sixth edition of the Women in Science Young Talent Search had been launched in South Africa. This initiative is a partnership between the foundation and specialist United Nations agency Unesco. Women researchers under the age of 40 are eligible to apply. The initiative covers a wide range of scientific fields, including (in the order and terminology of the foundation) formal sciences, life sciences, environmental sciences, physical sciences, engineering and technical sciences. The closing date for applications is May 19.

“At L’Oréal, we are anchored in beauty backed by science, because we deeply believe in the power of science to change the world,” affirmed L’Oréal South Africa corporate affairs & engagement manager Michelle Gololo. “The Women in Science National Young Talents Programme, in collaboration with Unesco, is more than just an award; it is a commitment to fostering diversity, excellence, and groundbreaking research in the scientific community.”

Since it first started, the programme has awarded grants worth more than R3-million to 32 outstanding women researchers, providing financial support for leading edge research. This year, successful candidates undertaking doctoral research will each receive grants of R80 000, while those carrying out postdoctoral research will each be granted R160 000.

Only 30% of science researchers are women. This L’Oréal/Unesco programme is intended to be a key driver of both inclusion and innovation. The philosophy underlying it is that “the world needs science and science needs women”.

“The award is a beacon of hope and recognition for female scientists across South Africa,” highlighted 2023 winner Dr Mapula Razwinani. “It’s not only about financial support; it’s about affirming that our work matters and that our passion for science can lead to transformative discoveries. It inspires me to dive deeper into my research with more conviction, knowing that I am backed by a global community with strong local relevance.”

L’Oréal South Africa was established in 1963. Its operations in the country include a manufacturing plant and the group’s Africa research and innovation (R&I) centre, which is focused on developing beauty products tailored for African customers. This is one of eight L’Oréal R&I Centres around the world.
