Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa reports that South Africa’s energy market reforms and investment opportunities will be showcased at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week.

In a statement, the Minister said that the energy delegation would share the reforms that have taken shape in the electricity sector to end loadshedding and which have modernised the electricity market in a way that encourages private sector participation and competition.

“The government is focused on increasing generation capacity from 48 GW to 78 GW by 2035, with significant investments in renewable energy, natural gas, and nuclear power,” the statement reads.

It also highlights South Africa’s procurement of over 13 422 MW of renewable energy since 2010, with associated investments of more than $16-billion.

South Africa would also use the gathering as an opportunity to share how it intends using its G20 Presidency to further regional and global sustainability goals, including by ensuring energy security and affordability, and promoting equitable energy transitions across Africa.

Besides Ramokgopa, the South Africa’s energy delegation includes Eskom CEO Dan Marokane and South African Nuclear Energy Corporation CEO Loyiso Tyabashe.
