Manufacturing production down 1.5% y/y in August

South Africa's manufacturing production decreased by 1.5% year-on-year in August, with the basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products, metal products and machinery division and the food and beverage division having made the largest negative contributions.

Basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products, metal products and machinery output was down 5.9% year-on-year in August, while food and beverage production decreased by 3% year-on-year.

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production, however, increased by 0.4% month-on-month in August. This followed month-on-month changes of -0.8% in July and -0.1% in June.

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production increased by 1.5% in the three months ended August, compared with the previous three months.

Six of the ten manufacturing divisions reported positive growth rates over this period, with the food and beverage; petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products; and motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment division having made the largest positive contributions.

Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales increased by 0.6% month-on-month in August. This followed month-on-month changes of -0.6% in July and 2% in June.

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales increased by 3% in the three months ended August, compared with the previous three months.
