Musina ring road project, South Africa – update
Name of the Project
Musina ring road project.
Location
Limpopo, South Africa.
Project Owner/s
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral).
Project Description
The construction of the ring road forms part of government’s infrastructure projects programme. It also forms part of the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan that is being implemented to rebuild and expand the construction sector and, by default, the broader economy, consequently ensuring sustainability, resilience and inclusion.
The road will serve to alleviate traffic congestion in the Musina central business district (CBD), and reduce the travel time for road users in and around the town. The project will ease congestion between the town and the Beitbridge border post, a gateway to Zimbabwe and countries such as Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo
The project comprises the construction of about 8 km of a greenfield single carriageway freeway from the western ring road around the town.
The alignment deviates from the existing N1 Section 29 alignment south of Musina, and ties back into the existing alignment north of the town.
The project includes the construction of three bridges; layer works and asphalt surfacing; 6 km of secondary roads, stormwater and subsoil drains; road furniture finishes, such as guard rails, road signs and fences; and noise-barrier walls.
Potential Job Creation
The Musina ring road project provides access to opportunities for local community members and small-, medium-sized and microenterprises. Nineteen targeted enterprises from the Musina municipal area are currently employed to participate in the project.
Up to 12% of the contract value is being allocated to targeted enterprises, of which 10% is allocated to women-owned companies. There is also a contractual requirement to employ local labour, often referred to as targeted labour, to the value of 6% of the contract value.
Capital Expenditure
R640-million.
Planned Start/End Date
The project is scheduled for completion in 2022.
