Leading South African steel merchant NJR Steel has announced that, through the acquisition of Staalbeer Steel Merchants, they will now manufacture and stock innovative lightweight steel roof trusses, boasting unmatched versatility and load capacity.

With the local building market embracing the revolutionary capabilities of steel building alternatives, NJR Steel emerges as an industry leader, providing cutting-edge solutions that blend durability, design versatility, and environmental sustainability.

There is a rising local awareness of the significant improvement in design capability and site program predictability of steel roof trusses, along with the multiple other key benefits when compared to traditional timber trusses. When it comes to safeguarding the longevity and safety of your structure, steel trusses stand as the ultimate solution. Crafted from galvanized Z200 coated steel truss members, they offer a robust and maintenance-free framework that is both impervious to termite damage and is importantly non-combustible.

One of the primary advantages of selecting steel trusses is that they can be pre-assembled which saves on labour costs on site, saves time and allows for better project planning. Since the trusses are pre-assembled, the need for skilled labour and extensive on-site construction work is significantly reduced. This not only saves labour costs but also minimises the reliance on specialised construction skills, making the construction process more accessible and cost-effective. Pre-assembled trusses also minimises the likelihood of errors during installation.

“NJR Steel’s lightweight trusses boast unmatched strength and load capacity, making them the ideal choice for a myriad of projects. Key to our manufactured trusses is an innovative triple overlap design that guarantees exceptional durability even under the most substantial loads. This cutting-edge design, coupled with our use of high-quality 12mm hollow core rivets, ensures maximum stability and reliability, setting new benchmarks in construction integrity.” Says NJR’ Steel’s Group Marketing Manager Nick Chapman.

“Our truss designs conform to SANS 517 design principles and NHBRC specifications, ensuring compliance with industry standards. Additionally, trusses and battens are non-combustible, enhancing safety measures for your construction projects. By incorporating a roll-formed U-shaped Truss profile, we guarantee trusses that are not only incredibly strong but also remarkably lightweight. This innovative approach to construction ensures that our structures stand the test of time, withstanding even the harshest of environmental conditions.

The truss cords and webs feature a unique triple overlap (3 times material thickness) at load points, providing extra strength where it matters the most. Trusses are factory assembled using a 12mm hollow core rivet that is crimped in place, ensuring both structural integrity and dimensional accuracy,” Chapman explained.

With a rich heritage dating back to 1980, and 26 branches across the country, NJR Steel stands as South Africa’s first choice for steel. NJR offers unmatched service excellence, nationwide accessibility and competitive pricing across a wide range of steel and hardware products. As a trusted partner for builders, architects, and contractors, NJR Steel is committed to delivering top-quality steel that meets the highest standards of durability, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
