NJR Steel, Slim B&D and Ricasha to strengthen Gauteng’s road infrastructure
In a significant stride toward improving Gauteng’s transportation network, Slim B&D Construction, assisted by Ricasha Build, has been awarded the tender for the roadworks on the dual carriageway PWV5 (Winnie Mandela Road/R511) and the N14 in Diepsloot. This project marks a pivotal and much-needed development in the region’s road network.
NJR Steel, one of South Africa’s largest steel distributors, with 26 branches across the country, is proud to be a key contributor, having secured the contract for supplying all of the reinforcing cut and bend steel for these bridges, totalling an impressive 275 t. Reinforcing mesh sheets were also supplied and manufactured in the same processing branch, situated in Brakpan, where the reinforcing was also cut and bent.
The project involves not just the reconstruction of the roads but also the construction of three major bridges. The importance of quality steel in the PWV5 and N14 roadworks project cannot be overstated. High-quality certified steel ensures the structural integrity and longevity of the bridges, which are critical components in supporting the heavy traffic expected on these major thoroughfares.
NJR’s commitment to excellence, precision in cutting, and bending of rebar, together with prompt delivery, through its broad range of vehicle configurations, have made it a valuable partner in ensuring the success and durability of this construction. This reliability and quality assurance are why NJR Steel remains the preferred choice in the South African steel industry, especially for high-stakes projects.
Engineering Excellence
The intricate construction included a vast quantity of concrete, meeting rigorous specifications to ensure the durability and stability of the bridges. One of the most challenging aspects of this project is the construction of a water bridge designed to manage the flow of water beneath the main road. This required sophisticated engineering to divert water flow effectively, ensuring the structure’s soundness. The completion of this bridge is anticipated by September 2024, adding another milestone to the project’s achievements.
Catalysing Regional Development
This road upgrade is more than just an infrastructure improvement; it is a catalyst for economic growth. The K46 road, also known as Winnie Mandela Drive, is a crucial artery linking Gauteng, significantly improving traffic flow from Pretoria to Sandton via Diepsloot. The road’s completion is expected to spur further developments, including mixed-use activities within Steyn City, thereby creating job opportunities and boosting the local economy.
The involvement of Steyn City Properties, which has invested 30% into the project, underscores the collaborative effort to ensure the project’s success. This partnership emphasizes the use of broad-based black economic empowerment contractors, promoting job creation and empowering emerging contractors in the region.
NJR Steel Processing’s role in supplying the certified, locally manufactured reinforcing steel, for the bridges is a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence and its pivotal role in this landmark project. As the project nears completion, it stands as a beacon of progress and a model of successful public-private partnership in South Africa’s infrastructure development.
