It is extremely important that South Africa puts maximum emphasis on the need for our nation to attain the highest levels of engineering excellence. The pressing ahead by Public Works and Infrastructure Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala to set up the Office of the Engineer-General South Africa as soon as possible points to the urgency to bridge regulatory gaps and to uphold engineering standards, particularly at this time when large-scale engineering projects critical to South Africa’s economic growth are essential.

It also provides an avenue for the private sector to make use of the Public Private Partnership model to its fullest and most inclusive extent. The Office of the Engineer-General South Africa must be used as the lever through which South Africa can ensure a resilient and sustainable infrastructure economy going forward.
