JSE- and ASX-listed base metals miner Orion Minerals has appointed Johan van Dyk project director, in support of the operational-readiness activities currently under way at the company’s Prieska copper and zinc mine, in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.

Van Dyk brings to the position more than 40 years’ experience in coal and base metal operations, particularly strategic leadership experience with high-volume production, projects and environmental, social and governance.

He previously worked at Palabora Mining Company for 26 years, with prior positions at companies such as the South African Iron and Steel Corporation, the South African Oil from Coal Corporation and Rio Tinto’s North Parkes mines in Australia.

Orion MD and CEO Tony Lennox says having an experienced project team is key to the company’s transition from a project developer to a producing mining company, particularly to achieve first concentrate production from the Uppers section at the Prieska mine, which is planned for end-2026.

Orion earlier this month signed a nonbinding term sheet agreement with diversified miner Glencore, which covers financing of up to $250-million for development of the Prieska mine, as well as concentrate offtake.

Glencore will buy 100% of the bulk concentrate produced from the Uppers section of the mine for five years and 100% of the copper and zinc concentrates produced from the Deeps section for ten years.

A binding agreement between the companies is expected to be concluded in the next four to six weeks.
