Pipe manufacturer extends services to include pipeline management

18th January 2008

Font size: - +

Steel pipe and tube specialist Robor has extended its range of services beyond the supply of pipes and pipe-protection pro- ducts to include pipeline management as well as customer support.
“Robor has adopted a consultative selling approach. The aim is to supply a product or pipe and then assist in all aspects of installation, monitoring and maintenance to ensure that the client’s pipeline achieves the most favourable performance and lifespan,” says Robor pipe systems MD Pieter Liebenberg.

The company will focus on developing constructive and consultative relationships with contractors and owners to create a business culture of good contract practice in the field, defect-free installation, and dynamic support.

To accomplish this, Robor will advise contractors on installation and monitor performance. The company will also provide field staff to assist where necessary.

Using the new approach, Robor has already successfully completed two pipeline projects, including a Vaal River Eastern Sub-system Augmentation Project contract for corrosion protection, and a hydrogen gas pipeline for Air Products between Vanderbijlpark and Springs.
“Through a combination of expertise and direct involvement in pipeline management, Robor can guarantee clients first-rate and properly protected pipelines. This translates into saved money and investment peace of mind,” comments Liebenberg.

Meanwhile, preventing the corrosion of steel pipes is a concern for companies in the oil, gas, water, petrochemicals and other related industries. Inadequately protected pipelines can result in poor flow performance, environmental contamination, safety risks and inflated maintenance costs, all of which lead to unnecessary financial losses.
Robor offers a range of effective and field-proven internal and external corrosion protection solutions.

“Using the right technology to protect steel pipes from corrosion can dramatically extend the pipeline’s lifespan from 18 months to between 20 years and 40 years, providing a cost-saving advant- age. With the different requirements of each industry, it is important to choose a supplier that can cater for all corrosion protection demands,” explains Liebenberg.

“Robor supplies tried and tested corrosion protection products, most of which have seen over 20 years of successful application in the field.

“The company also follows strict international specifications for control, application, and installation, and prides itself on delivering defect-free solutions across all industries,” he adds.
Robor’s diverse product offering includes TOSAwrap, a dual coating system, consisting of a mastic solution and polyolefin sleeve that is heat-shrunk onto the steel pipe. The wrap, which has been very successful in the gas and water markets, gives the steel pipe the same anticorrosion benefits of plastic and allows easy repair through resealing.
TOSAguard is a fire-retardant corrosion-protection coating for use on pipelines that are at risk from internal or external fire.

Applications include tunnels, culverts, and on pipelines above ground. The coating can also be used to protect and hide pipelines in environmentally sensitive areas.
Robor is the South African agent and distributor for Power-crete, an American-produced range of solvent-free liquid epoxies. The versatile coatings can be used for corrosion prevention, directional drill, rehabilitation, and water and wastewater tank coatings as well as offshore. Powercrete PW is an internal corrosion-protection solution. Through its single coat and rapid cure (only five-and-a-half hours) technology, the product enables fast turnaround times and is less susceptible to damage than its multiple-coat counterparts. Powercrete PW is mainly used for water applications, both raw and potable, and can also act as a flow enhancer for gas lines.
Robor also supplies specialised shrink sleeves to protect girth welds and polytapes (blended plastics), which are used in the hydrocarbon and gas industries, with clients such as Sasol and Air Products.

“Robor is South Africa’s leading supplier of steel pipe corrosion protection. Years of experience and high-quality products ensure that we can provide the best solution at the best price,” Liebenberg claims.
