Policymakers must be made to advance fuel cell electric vehicles without delay

A call on policymakers to advance fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) alongside battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is a must in South Africa. European policymakers are being alerted to the urgent necessity of equal FCEV/BEV roll-out as a climate priority.

Our country is blessed with platinum group metals (PGMs), which even in deficit, have none of the major supply gaps of the critical minerals needed for BEVs.

The significant advantage of FCEVs is that they make use of existing infrastructure and both FCEVs and BEVs, in sensible proportions, are needed to build a better world. What must be trumpeted from the rooftops is that an energy transition is impossible without PGMs. We need to see more policy support to drive commercial deployments.
