Leading private security industry bodies have united in opposition to recently published amendments to the Private Security Industry Regulations concerning firearms control.

The South African National Security Employers Association, the Security Association of South Africa, the National Security Forum (NSF), the Consolidated Employers Organisation, the Association of Private Security Owners of South Africa and the Locksmith Association of South Africa – representing employers throughout the private security sector – have expressed grave concerns regarding the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority's (PSIRA’s) proposed changes to Firearm Regulations under the Private Security Industry Regulation Act.

The amendments, put forward by South African Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, purportedly aim to strengthen firearm and weapons controls, while increasing regulatory oversight.

The organisations warn, however, that these changes could severely impact both operational capabilities and public safety.

In response, the organisations have collectively engaged specialist attorney Martin Hood of MJ Hood and Associates to submit formal opposition to PSIRA.

Steve Conradie, national chairperson of the NSF and spokesperson for the coalition, stated that the organisations have noted with concern, and voiced strong opposition to, the PSIRA's proposed amendments to the Firearm Regulations.

The coalition of security bodies believes that if implemented in their current form, the amendments will "seriously undermine the stability and effectiveness of the private security industry, and by extension, the safety of South African citizens.”

"We urge government to work collaboratively with the sector to find solutions that support both accountability, operational viability and engage with the organisations and society on the way forward," says Conradie.

The organisations encourage members to continue submitting individual objections while the employer's organisations ensure that members' best interests will be protected at all times through the relevant legal processes.

"If these regulations are promulgated, it will result in massive job losses and will put the safety of the public at risk," Conradie warns.

Members will receive regular updates as the situation develops. The organisations encourage those with questions or concerns to contact their respective organisation administrators.
