Public-private togetherness already showing signs of boosting logistics

The new multiparty government is in many ways continuing to progress advances that were already in motion before the various South African political parties decided to work in unison.

Reports on rail and port logistics improvement are already emerging from the results presentations of Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed corporate companies but in a very balanced way. This is because the rail maintenance neglect has been so extensive in some instances that mini-shuts and maxi-shuts are going to continue to feature for some time.

But the private sector is not complaining about the prospect of necessary shutdowns because the openness introduced is facilitating invaluable joint planning that results in minimal export loss. Even better is that independent technical assessments are in motion that could elevate South African logistics to new heights. New structural thinking is also being introduced that could ensure that our logistical expertise has a far longer globally competitive horizon.
