Founded in 1920 and based in Germiston, South Africa, Rand Refinery stands as Africa’s only London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Good Delivery accredited precious metals refinery — a globally recognised seal of trust, quality and ethical sourcing. As the continent’s premier precious metals refiner, Rand Refinery has refined more than one-third of the world’s mined gold.

With global markets increasingly focused on traceability, sustainability and responsible sourcing, Rand Refinery is at the forefront of transforming Africa’s precious metals narrative. The company not only refines doré from across the continent but also facilitates responsible supply chain integration by ensuring full compliance with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for supply from conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

Highlighting its global standing and recognition in the market, the company is one of only seven internationally recognised referees by the LBMA, to assist LBMA in maintaining the good delivery system and its standards.

Sustainability is at the core of the business—it is woven into Rand Refinery’s commitment to people, in its approach to refining precious metals with skill and excellence, and in the emphasis it places on being a responsible global citizen which operates a sustainable business and takes up the cudgels in the fight against climate change.

Rand Refinery’s product innovation – exemplified by RandTrack and its early adoption of the Gold Bar Integrity platform – ensures its gold is ethical as well as digitally traceable, fraud-resistant and future-fit. It focuses intently on the delivery of products and data integrity across the entire supply chain.

It goes beyond simply measuring outputs to tracking impact and a 4.5 MW solar farm has been commissioned to power the refinery, reducing emissions by 8.5 kT of CO2e. Water savings of 23% already exceed the company’s FY27 goal.

In an era of rising demand for ethical minerals, Rand Refinery is not just refining gold — it is refining trust, forging global partnerships, and anchoring Africa’s precious metals market to world-class standards. Its story is not just about precious metals, but about a future where Africa’s resources empower inclusive, responsible and transparent growth.

Rand Refinery is poised to strengthen its leadership in the industry. With strategic investments in cutting-edge technologies and a proactive approach to exploring new markets, it is fully committed to maintaining its position at the forefront of change and growth.
