Renewable energy power producer Red Rocket Energy has installed the 32 main turbines at the Brandvalley Wind Farm.

All 32 Vestas V150-4.5MW wind turbines have been installed 17 months after construction started in 2023. This represents a major step towards reaching the commercial operations date, which is expected to be achieved in the fourth quarter.

The Brandvalley Wind Farm project has a nameplate capacity of 144 MW and is located between Matjiesfontein and Sutherland.

It has drawn significant attention alongside its sibling project the Rietkloof Wind Farm, which also has a nameplate capacity of 144 MW, and the Wolf Wind Farm, in the Eastern Cape, with a capacity of 85 MW.

The projects all reached financial close in February 2023 as part of Round 5 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme for Red Rocket.

"The achievement showcases the speed and sophistication of our team in approaching the construction phase. The completion marks a pivotal moment on our journey to reach commercial operations and ultimately add renewable energy to the grid," the company said.

Once operational, the wind farm will meet the energy needs of up to 183 000 households a year by generating 590 GWh/y and avoiding 620 000 t of CO2-equivalent each year.
