Government continually finds reasons, real and imagined, for failing to follow through with the structural reforms that have been identified as urgent to place the country on a growth pathway. The most recent high-profile delay has related to the mishandling of the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill, but there are many lower-profile delays that simply don’t capture headlines. The 2024 elections are likely to provide yet another convenient excuse for foot dragging.
