Rooppur nuclear power plant, Bangladesh – update
Name of the Project
Rooppur nuclear power plant (NPP).
Location
Ishwardi Upazilla, 160 km from Dhaka, in Bangladesh.
Project Owner/s
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC).
Project Description
The Rooppur NPP will comprise two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2 400 MW.
Potential Job Creation
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
$12.65-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
Unit 1 is scheduled for completion in 2024 and Unit 2 in 2025.
Latest Developments
Dummy fuel assemblies (DFAs) are being loaded into Unit 1 of the NPP. The work is being performed by specialists of Atomstroyexpor, Atomtechenergo and Rosenergoatom.
The dummy fuel assemblies' dimensions, weight and materials are exact replicas of standard fuel assemblies, but without nuclear fuel. They are designed to model the geometry of the reactor core and to confirm hydraulic parameters of the reactor plant during circulation flushing and reactor cold and hot tests. The circulation flushing and reactor cold and hot tests are the most important step of startup and adjustment works, preceding physical startup of the power unit to confirm its reliable and safe operation.
DFAs are also necessary to master handling operations using the refuelling machine. After confirmation of all parameters of the reactor plant with the aid of dummy assemblies, nuclear fuel loading will follow.
Nuclear fuel loading will only take place after the tests with the dummy fuel assemblies have been successfully conducted.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Various divisions of Rosatom are in charge of manufacturing reactor vessels, steam generators, pumps, heat-exchangers and other equipment.
