Skukuza Airport terminal damaged by fire but scheduled flights continuing
South African regional and domestic airline Airlink on Monday confirmed that part of the terminal roof at Skukuza Airport had been damaged in a bush fire on Sunday. Skukuza Airport is at the world-renowned Kruger National Park, close to the park’s Skukuza main camp (which is also the location of the camp’s headquarters).
During the fire, all passengers and staff were safely evacuated, and there were no casualties. Fighting the fire also caused some water damage. Clean-up and repair activities are already under way.
Airlink flights will continue on schedule. The airline and SANParks (the agency responsible for the country’s national parks), along with partner service providers and the local game lodges, have created temporary arrivals and departure facilities, as well as related services. They were using back-up systems to perform the required processes.
“We want to minimise any disruptions at Skukuza and we apologise for any inconvenience while we rely on our contingency measures and facilities at Skukuza,” assured Airlink CEO and MD Rodger Foster.
Travellers who would use shuttle vehicles from or to the airport, should check with the lodges where they would be staying, to see if there were any changes to the schedules for these shuttles.
