South Africa must move inventively and swiftly to recover lost ferroalloy ground
Not that long ago, South Africa’s private sector was the world's leading ferroalloy producer. But that came to an end when the public sector performed so badly on the energy front that China in many cases took over the ferroalloy leadership role using South African-mined raw ore.
Now, as this country enters a new era of public-private collaboration on the inclusive economic growth and job creation fronts, major opportunities are presenting themselves to win back lost ground within the minerals-energy complex that once afforded South Africa top spots.
These were along a supply chain that imparts distinctive qualities to steel, stainless steel and several other combinations of metallic elements that offer greater strength, better corrosion resistance and longer life to metal mixtures. In most cases, the smelter complexes and furnaces that made South Africa’s possible are still in place to support a restart, but this time with far greater percentage of energy that can be generated by the private sector itself.
