Strata Logistics Donates A Tandem Bicycle to Retina SA at the 36th Dis-Chem Ride for Sight Cycle Event

Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to community support and inclusivity, Strata Logistics proudly partnered with Retina South Africa at the 36th annual Dis-Chem Ride for Sight, held recently at the Boksburg City Stadium. The event featured two race distances: the 116km Super Classic presented by Ensure Gold, and the 62km DS24 Challenge, catering to a wide range of cyclists, including dedicated para sport categories.
This cause holds personal significance for the Strata Logistics family. Brett Beukes, the company's Financial Manager, has witnessed the challenges of visual impairment firsthand, as his wife, Ann Beukes, was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 20 and her site deteriorated over time until she lost her sight completely five years ago.
In a heartfelt initiative to empower the visually impaired community, Brett spearheaded the donation of a tandem bicycle, branded with the Strata Logistics insignia. The tandem bike was ceremoniously handed over during the event's prize-giving ceremony. This gesture underscores Strata Logistics' dedication to enhancing mobility and promoting inclusivity for individuals with visual challenges.
The tandem bicycle was handed over to Linsay Engelbrecht, Retina SA Head of Special Events and Para-sport Development and will be used by a visually impaired cyclist in next year's race. Diagnosed in 2006 with Stargardt disease—a rare genetic condition affecting central vision—Linsay has not allowed her visual impairment to define her. An accomplished para-athlete, she has represented South Africa in various international competitions, earning accolades for her resilience and determination. Linsay's passion for the outdoors and commitment to embracing every moment make her a beacon of inspiration to many.
In South Africa, approximately 0.8% of the population experiences blindness, with 2.3% facing moderate to severe visual impairment. Events like the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight cycle race not only raise awareness but also provide visually impaired individuals with opportunities to experience the freedom and exhilaration of cycling. “Tandem cycling, in particular, fosters a sense of independence and community, as visually impaired riders team up with sighted partners to navigate the course together,” says Linsay.
“Strata Logistics remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity and empower individuals facing visual challenges, celebrating their resilience and inspiring journeys,” says Deon De Villiers, Managing Member at Strata Logistics.
