Name of the Project
Swedish spent fuel repository (SFR).

Location
Forsmark, in the municipality of Östhammar, in Sweden.

Project Owner/s
Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB).

Project Description
The SFR has been operating since 1988. Waste, such as filters, tools and clothing used in Swedish nuclear power plants, as well as materials from medical care, industry and research, are disposed of at the facility. SKB plans to create a new section linked directly to the existing SFR. When the extension is completed, the SFR will be three times its current size.

When the extension of SFR is complete, the facility will also accommodate waste from the decommissioning and dismantling of the Swedish nuclear power plants. This will include reactor components, concrete and other building materials.

The SFR can house about 63 000 m3 of low- and intermediate-level operational waste and is now more than half full.

The existing SFR’s rock vaults are situated about 60 m below the bottom of the Baltic sea and are reached through access and construction tunnels, which are close to the harbour in Forsmark. The new vaults in the extension will be deeper, about 120 m below the bottom of the sea.

The new section of the SFR will have five 275-m-long rock vaults and one 240 m vault.

Once the project is complete, the facility will have a storage capacity of about 180 000 m3.
