TAC – THE PROPOSED ROSSLYN INLAND PORT INVESTOR READY (March 2021)

Following the City of Tshwane Council’s decision to adopt the Tshwane Automotive City (TAC) Masterplan into their region 1 - Regional Spatial Development Framework (RSDF) in February 2019, the TAC Project Management Office has since taken a decision to commence with the Inland Port project preparation and designs.

The image below illustrates the 26ha Logistics Hub (Inland Port) and an additional 15ha Shared Vehicle Distribution Centre (VDC), which together make the 41ha Inland Port precinct that has been earmarked in close consultation with the automotive industry, port authorities, provincial and national government. A truck staging area is also planned to accommodate existing heavy-duty vehicles with capacity for future growth.

The City of Tshwane, Province and port authorities all agreed that although the primary consolidation terminal should be developed at Pyramid South Terminals, a secondary terminal for the specific use by the automotive sector for exporting cars and containers based in Rosslyn is required and should be developed.

The Rosslyn Inland Port will be benchmarked on similar international Inland Ports like Zaragoza, in Spain. This will ensure that Tshwane’s large car manufacturers (i.e. Ford, Nissan and BMW) are supported in their drive to increase vehicle production for export by reducing logistics costs and improving efficiency. With the assistance of customs clearance facilities to be located within the precinct, vehicles due for export will be able to clear customs in Rosslyn, instead of at the Durban or EC harbors.

The AIDC is in a process of completing the Rosslyn Inland Port project preparation work including confirming the main investor who will be responsible for developing and operating the proposed Inland Port. The project is envisaged to bring exciting prospects and opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs, as well as improving the lives of people in adjacent communities and throughout the Gauteng Province.

The TAC programme is a strategic infrastructure programme that is aimed at creating a Living and a Productive City, through stimulating automotive vehicle assembly and component manufacturing by accelerating the development of key infrastructure such as logistics, residential and recreational   areas through public and private partnerships in the Rosslyn, Klerksoord and Silverton areas.
