Toyota autobody plant.
Location
The 32 000 m² site is located in the Dube Trade Port’s TradeZone 2, in Durban, eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Project Owner/s
Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM); and a joint venture (JV) between Ogihara South Africa (OSA) and Toyota Tsusho Africa (TTAF), a subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho Corporation; and Ogihara (Thailand) Corporation (OTC).
Project Description
The project will significantly add to local manufacturing with the production of small to medium stamped parts for TSAM. The project will phase in the sourcing of additional local press parts that are currently imported. This will not only boost local industry capabilities and economic growth but also lead to an increase of 25 000 t/y in locally procured steel.
Potential Job Creation
The project will drive significant job creation, with 250 new jobs expected to be created by 2026, with a further 1 040 indirect jobs added through the value chain.
Capital Expenditure
R1.1-billion. TSAM will contribute R545-million to the new facility and the JV R630-million.
Planned Start/End Date
Production is set to start in July 2025.
