Canada's Troilus Gold on Tuesday signed a memorandum of agreement with German copper smelter Aurubis for the long-term offtake of copper/gold concentrate from its project in Québec.

The agreement advances indicative terms unveiled earlier this year into a formal framework that secures a significant portion of Troilus’ future concentrate supply. It also strengthens commercial ties between Canada and Europe as both jurisdictions seek to build more resilient critical mineral supply chains.

The memorandum was signed in Berlin during the Canadian government’s Critical Minerals Mission, which was attended by Prime Minister Mark Carney, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, and German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche, alongside executives from major mining and energy companies.

“Signing this agreement with Aurubis during Canada’s Critical Minerals Mission to Germany is highly significant for Troilus,” said Troilus CEO Justin Reid. “It underscores the international importance of our project, strengthens Canada–Europe cooperation on critical minerals, and provides a clear step toward completing the financing required to advance construction. We are proud to be developing a project that will deliver benefits in Québec while supporting secure supply chains for our European partners.”

The agreement comes as Troilus continues to progress a debt financing package of up to $700-million to fund construction of its proposed openpit mine in north-central Québec. A feasibility study completed in 2024 outlined a 22-year operation producing copper and gold from a 50 000 t/d mine, positioning it as one of North America’s key development-stage assets.

For Germany, the supply deal with Aurubis highlights Europe’s strategy of securing access to Canadian raw materials as it seeks to reduce reliance on imports from more politically volatile regions.

“The partnership between Troilus and Aurubis marks a step forward in advancing the types of diversified trade, secure supply chains, and G7 partnership that will make Canada an energy and critical minerals superpower, not only reinforcing Canada’s position as a reliable supplier of responsibly sourced copper and gold, but deepening our strategic partnership with Germany and the European Union,” Hodgson said. “I commend Troilus and Aurubis for, and am proud to see Canadian expertise, innovations and resources playing a central role in shaping the future of critical minerals.”
