Name of the Project
Ukuqala solar plant.

Location
Near De Aar, in the Northern Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Renewable-energy developer Mulilo.

Project Description
The solar project is the first renewable-energy project to power specialty gas producer Air Product’s air separation units across South Africa, with electricity delivered through wheeling to various locations. The project will be one of four other Mulilo projects connected to the Kestrel Main Transmission Substation, currently under construction.

The solar plant will boast 75 MW alternating current (ac) maximum output and a 105 MW direct current (dc) installed capacity, owing to an optimised design featuring a high ac/dc ratio.

This design enables the plant to reach its maximum output earlier in the day and sustain it for longer, contributing an estimated 248 GWh/y of power.

Potential Job Creation
