Precious metals streaming company Wheaton Precious Metals has unveiled the Future of Mining Challenge, a new initiative offering a $1-million prize to advance groundbreaking mining technologies.

The challenge, announced on Tuesday, aims to support innovations that reduce the environmental impact of mining operations. Specifically, it seeks technologies capable of lowering greenhouse-gas emissions across both base and precious metal mining operations. These solutions should be scalable and applicable worldwide to drive significant changes in industry practices.

“Mining is integral to every facet of our daily lives, providing the essential materials that are needed for our society,” said Wheaton president and CEO Randy Smallwood. “From the metals used and found in our infrastructure and technology, to those needed for a transition to a low-carbon economy, we continue to rely on the resources from the mining industry. It is critical that we foster innovation and collaboration to improve the future of mining, with a goal of making current practices more efficient and sustainable.”

The Future of Mining Challenge will be supported by Foresight Canada, an organisation dedicated to promoting environmental and economic sustainability through innovation.

The application period opens on September 18. The winning technology will be announced in March 2025 during the PDAC Convention in Toronto.
