JSE-listed Northam Platinum Holdings.
Development is in collaboration with an independent power producer through a power purchase agreement, which will fund the construction and then manage the installations.
Project Description
The development of an 80 MW solar power farm is in progress.
The plant will deliver 220 GWh/y of energy directly to Zondereinde’s mining and smelting operations, independent of State-owned entity Eskom’s grid, consequently reducing the operation’s carbon footprint by 22%.
Further benefits include significant cost savings and reduced power supply risk.
Power will be supplied behind the Eskom meter, and will, thus, not be subject to load curtailment.
The project is part of a broader strategy to reduce Northam’s environmental impact while securing the supply of bulk services.
This includes a reduction in carbon intensity by 60%, from a 2019 baseline, by 2030, while improving power availability and decreasing overall electricity costs.
