Actom highlights innovative solutions for energy sector maintenance, repair
Electrical equipment supplier Actom remains a leading player in the energy sector via its repairs and maintenance services, which provide a range of services that cater to the maintenance and repair of equipment used in power generation.
The company has a long-standing relationship with State-owned Eskom, where it provides services such as boiler maintenance, motor repairs, and industrial fan repairs.
“Our repair and maintenance divisions have been able to be part of the solution during loadshedding because of increased breakdowns equipment like transformers and mini substations, which were never designed for frequent starts or stops,” the company explains
Actom has also been involved in the supply of equipment in Renewable Energy Independent. Power Producer Procurement Programmee from Round 1,
“This has seen our products evolve to rdeveloping an online monitoring system for transformers that provides real-time information on their performance. The system is of particular importance for renewable energy plants, which are often located in remote areas and are subject to harsh weather conditions.
Further innovation in the sector has seen Actom manufacture padmount transformers, which combine power transformers, MV switchgear, and LV switchgear as a skid or containerised solution. The approach, the company explains, “saves on connection cabling and reduces the complexity of the system”.
Meanwhile, Actom's Smart Technology division is also exploring a range of energy solutions, including battery chargers, direct current (DC) power systems, solar photovoltaic power systems, and battery energy storage systems.
“We are committed to expanding our manufacturing base in energy efficient systems, where we focus on providing innovative solutions to meet the needs of the market.”
While Actom has a strong presence in the energy sector, the company is also making inroads in other industries, such as mining.
It explains that the decline in maintenance in the mining sector owing to energy constraints has led companies to reduce their budgets for maintenance.
To mitigate this, Actom has explored other markets on the continent, such as the repair and maintenance of transformers, mine winders, off highway vehicles, as well as DC and traction motors.
“We place a strong emphasis on health and safety, with stringent standards and best practices that align with various quality systems in the industry,” the company notes.
Its Denver facility, for example, has a South African National Accreditation System (SANS) S555 accredited oil regeneration facility, which returns used transformer oil to internationally specified standards for re-use in transformers.
This practice, Actom explains, “reduces the burden on the environment by negating the need to produce new oil”.
The facility also has a Section 20 waste permit from the Department Forestry, Fisheries and the of Environmental, and all quality tests are performed on-site by a fully comprehensive accredited laboratory.
Actom's core competencies in repairing and refurbishing transformers have enabled the company to expand its offering to include the repair and refurbishment of industrial fans.
This has culminated in the Fanserve contract with a number of Eskom generation power stations, highlighting Actom's commitment to providing innovative solutions that meet the needs of the market.
Overall, the company's commitment to health and safety, coupled with its core competencies, places it in a strong position to expand its offering and make inroads into new industries in the future.
