Africa’s first AI legal service
South African intellectual property (IP) law firm Adams & Adams has launched a digital platform and advisory service, which it says is the first on the continent.
The company notes that AI adoption is accelerating, but without clear policies and legal oversight, businesses risk losing ownership of their innovations, facing infringement claims, or damage to their reputations. The SMARTAI IP portal is designed to help businesses understand, assess and proactively manage the risks posed by AI, ensuring compliance and protecting IP.
“As artificial intelligence transforms industries at an unprecedented pace, businesses face new and complex risks, from IP exposure to governance gaps. The SMARTAI IP Portal is the first of its kind, offering organisations a practical way to measure their AI readiness and take action,” says Adams & Adams lead partner: AI IP advisory team Darren Olivier.
Features of the portal:
- AI IP readiness test and scorecard: Businesses can complete a unique online assessment to identify their exposure and readiness across key governance areas.
- Tailored advisory services: Six discrete, expert-led services help organisations improve their scores, focusing first on high-risk areas and providing bespoke combinations to suit each business’s needs.
- Education and resources: Practical information and educational guides empower teams to make informed decisions and implement best practices.
- Bi-monthly newsletter: Sector-specific insights, regulatory updates and actionable takeaways delivered every two months.
“Our mission is to empower African businesses to thrive in the age of AI, with legal frameworks and practical solutions that keep pace with technology,” says Olivier. “The SMARTAI IP Portal is a proactive step towards safeguarding innovation and building resilient organisations,” says Adams & Adams Partner: AI IP advisory group Lita Miti-Qamata.
